Gregg Davies represented Gwent at rugby and also played soccer. As an outside half he played rugby with Rob Ackerman who was then his inside half. At 15, he was in the national squad, but didn't get a cap. He also had a trial for the Welsh soccer team and was on the books at Wrexham, where he often played against Ian Rush. At Shrewsbury he captained the rugby and football teams and his sporting excellence earned him a scholarship to Kent School in Connecticut. Returning to the UK, he studied at St Andrew’s University in Scotland, where he captained the rugby and athletics teams. He played at full-back for the Scottish Universities football team as well as serving as president of the university’s athletics society. In 2001, Gregg Davies refereed at the U21 world cup in South Africa and took charge of the final between New Zealand and Australia. "
