Maxime Chalon played his rugby at scrum half for Brive youth, Orleans in the Pro D2, Bordeaux-Begles in the Top 16, Perigueux (Pro D2) before finishing his career at Tours(D2) and Le Bugue(F1). He finally retired as a player at the age of 29 and went on to become a computer scientist in Dordogne. Then began his career as a referee. Obtaining the requisite qualifications, he moved through the French pyramid beginning at Federal level, then D2 and finally Top 14."
